Theory Development Workshop – Nov. 7 & 8, 2024
Exploring & Developing New Theoretical Approaches to Market-Based Management & Entrepreneurship
We are excited to announce the call for applications to participate in a Theory Development
Workshop (TDW) to be held in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on the beautiful campus of Oklahoma
State University (OSU), on November 7 & 8, 2024.
The workshop is being jointly sponsored and hosted by OSU’s School of Entrepreneurship and the Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise (ISFE). Attendance is free and open to all, but pre-registration is required (see above).
The TDW represents a unique opportunity for PhD students and early-career faculty
to hone their theory-development skills by receiving direct and personal feedback
from established senior scholars—scholars with demonstrated excellence in theory development
and publishing groundbreaking conceptual papers in the fields of entrepreneurship,
management, and Austrian economics.
The senior scholars who will be jointly leading this TDW are Dr. Mark Packard (Florida Atlantic University), Dr. Jeffery McMullen (Indiana University) and Dr. Per Bylund (Oklahoma State University).
The TDW will be a highly selective event wherein PhD students and early-career faculty
from all disciplines are invited to submit conceptual-paper ideas. Each paper idea will be reviewed by one of the TDW’s aforementioned senior scholars. Each senior scholar will select up to five (5) paper ideas to be discussed during
the TDW. As such, up to fifteen (15) young scholars will be selected.
Each young scholar who is selected and who attends the TDW (and resides outside of
Oklahoma) will be provided a travel stipend equal to $750 plus up to $175 per night
for up to two (2) night's on-campus lodging at The Atherton Hotel.
Applicants are invited to submit conceptual (not empirical) paper ideas that are related
to any of the following: entrepreneurship, management, Austrian economics. Each paper idea must be tailored to adhere to the guidelines provided by Dr. Jay Barney
in his Academy of Management Review (AMR) article entitled “Positioning a Theory Paper for Publication,” which can be accessed via either of the following URL links:
journals.aom.org/doi/10.5465/amr.2018.0112
www.jstor.org/stable/26528658
Although applicants are welcome to submit conceptual-paper ideas from any topic relevant
to the fields of entrepreneurship, management, and Austrian economics, those within
the following topic areas will be given special consideration:
* Markets & Management
* Institutions & Entrepreneurship
* Political Economy & Entrepreneurship
* Austrian School Economics
* Innovation, Markets, & Entrepreneurship
* Decentralization
* Philosophy of Science
Although applicants are welcome to submit full working papers, that is not a requirement
and there is no guarantee that the full paper will be reviewed or evaluated. The review and selection process will focus primarily on each conceptual-paper idea,
which shall be instantiated as a draft introduction written in accordance with the
guidelines found in the aforementioned AMR article (by Dr. Jay Barney).
Applicants whose paper ideas are not selected will be invited to attend as observers
(but will not receive a travel stipend or lodging accommodations). Non-applicant
observers are also welcome to attend.
